Amazon MGM Studios is developing a new Stargate TV series, with the show helmed by Jac Schaeffer, the creator of Marvel’s 2021 Disney+ miniseries WandaVision.

As reported by Variety, this upcoming project comes as part of Schaeffer’s ongoing TV deal with the studio, which will span three years and see the 47-year-old developing, writing, executive producing, and directing original series for Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. According to Variety’s sources, this latest project will open its writers’ room soon, with Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures also executive producing alongside Schaeffer.
This will also mark Amazon’s second attempt at reviving the Stargate franchise in series format, as the studio was previously set for a new TV entry in the sci-fi franchise helmed by Martin Gero (Blindspot) in 2025, only for it to be axed earlier this year.
Stargate originally made its debut as a 1994 film starring James Spader and Kurt Russell, and centred on the titular Stargate, an ancient ring-shaped device that creates a wormhole for individuals to travel across the universe. The original film was followed by Stargate SG-1, the hit series that ran for 10 seasons from 1997 to 2007 and starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge. A spin-off, Stargate Atlantis, followed in 2004 and ran for five seasons until 2008.

While no stranger to the TV series space, the Stargate show marks Schaeffer’s move to a more sci-fi-centric genre, as it follows her previous work in the superhero genre with WandaVision and its 2024 spin-off, Agatha All Along. Before her work at Marvel, Schaeffer also wrote the screenplay for Disney’s 2017 animated film Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, alongside 2019’s The Hustle, a remake of the 1980s comedy film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
