‘Alien: Romulus’ Sequel In Development, Director Fede Álvarez In Talks To Return

20th Century Studios is actively developing a sequel to Alien: Romulus, with director Fede Álvarez in talks to return. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Steve Asbell, the president of the 20th Century Fox division, detailed plans for the follow-up to the successful first instalment.

“We’re working on a sequel idea now. We haven’t quite closed our deal with Fede [Álvarez], but we are going to, and he has an idea that we’re working on,” Asbell shared. The narrative will continue to follow the two survivors from the original film, Rain and Andy, portrayed by Cailee Spaeny (Civil WarPriscilla) and David Jonsson (Murder is EasyIndustry) respectively.

Asbell expressed his enthusiasm for the characters’ journey ahead in an Alien: Romulus sequel and reflected on the their potential, stating, “We know there’s going to be aliens. We know there’s going to be great horror set pieces. But I fell in love with both of them and I want to see what their story is.”

Alien: Romulus significantly boosted the franchise, achieving a global debut of US$108 million at the box office and receiving positive responses from fans and critics alike. The movie follows a group of young colonists on a harsh mining colony attempt to escape their bleak reality. However, their plan goes awry when they encounter Xenomorphs, the deadly alien creatures in an abandoned space station, leading to a desperate fight for survival.

Alien: Romulus

This development is part of a broader resurgence in the Alien franchise, with several projects in the pipeline. Legion‘s Noah Hawley is helming Alien: Earth, which promises to feature at least one Xenomorph, and Alien: Isolation 2 game is also underway. In a nod to the original movie’s legacy, Alien: Romulus will even see a nostalgic home release on VHS.

Beyond the Alien universe, 20th Century Studios, a subsidiary of Disney, is expanding its portfolio. The studio is also advancing with projects like multiple Predator films, Avatar 3, and a new entry in the Apes series, potentially targeting a 2027 release.
