Fresh off the success of his video game film adaptation, Resident Evil, Zach Cregger is looking ahead towards his upcoming original sci-fi thriller, The Flood, tapping The Hunger Games’ Jennifer Lawrence in a leading role.
As reported by Variety, Cregger is set to write, produce and direct the film, which is currently set for release on 11 August 2028. Since the film is still pretty far from materialising, plot details remain under wraps for now, although Cregger did tease during a previous interview with Men’s Health that the film will take its influence from the 1968 sci-fi classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
“I’m not comparing it to 2001, because I think 2001 is a true masterpiece in every sense of the word, but there’s a bizarreness to that movie that’s really undeniable, and it’s also a horror movie,” he previously explained. “I think 2001 is a really thrilling horror movie about human nature, and obviously about artificial intelligence, but it asks big questions. And I think, in that way, there’s some similarity with The Flood.”
While no further information on The Flood has been announced, including additional casting information and the role Lawrence is set to play, the film will mark a reunion between the filmmaker and Warner Bros following their 2025 horror mystery film Weapons. The movie will be produced by Amblin Entertainment, alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment.
“A deep-space exploration team aboard the Spiritus Mundi pick up a strange, recurring signal from a remote planet,” reads the film’s synopsis. “Captain Elena Voss leads the mission to investigate, only to discover a bizarre alien artifact that starts warping time, reality, and the crew’s minds.” With this early description in mind, the film does seem to take influence from the narrative of Ridley Scott’s 1979 horror classic Alien, although Cregger had previously clarified that this film will aim for something more bizarre than his previous horror works, previously telling The Wrap that “it’s not a horror movie, but it has a lot of horror in it.”
