Zach Cregger’s video game film adaptation Resident Evil has opened to a massive US$108.3 million worldwide, smashing records for both the filmmaker and the film franchise.
As reported by Deadline, the film grossed US$60 million domestically in its three-day debut weekend, which was already far above the US$40 million haul initially projected. Internationally, the film added US$43.8 million from 62 overseas markets.
Resident Evil’s performance doesn’t just make it the top earner over the box office weekend, it also set records as the best opening for a Resident Evil film to date, following 2012’s Resident Evil: Retribution ($70.6 million), alongside being Cregger’s best film opening after 2025’s Weapons, which debuted to US$70 million globally.
Set in the same universe as the games, but with its own original narrative, Resident Evil follows new hero Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who gets caught up in the Raccoon City outbreak while on a delivery run. Despite being an original take on the franchise and not having appearances from characters like Leon Kennedy or Ada Wong, the film still features many references to the games, such as the iconic typewriter, Heavy Shotgun Shells, and familiar foes like the Zombie Dog.
In second place, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continued its strong performance even in its tenth frame, garnering an additional US$21.3 million for a combined total of US$1.72 billion worldwide, cementing its position as Nolan’s biggest movie of all time. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, who undergoes a long and perilous journey home after the Trojan War and encounters mythical beings as he attempts to reunite with his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), and his son, Telemachus (Tom Holland).
Rounding out the top five earners this box office weekend were Warner Bros’ Practical Magic 2 (US$19.1 million), Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day (US$17.2 million), and Ketchup Entertainment’s Coyote Vs Acme (US$10.5 million).
