Avengers: Endgame Encore has brought the hit 2019 superhero movie back to theatres once more, and Marvel fans were eager to rewatch it to catch all the new scenes that set up Doomsday, with the film topping the box office once more with a massive US$86 million global haul.
As reported by Variety, the re-release garnered US$26 million in North America and US$60 million overseas over its launch weekend, bringing the 2019 blockbuster’s total tally to US$2.88 billion. With these figures, the film is now one step closer to becoming the biggest Hollywood release of all time, as it is now just US$39 million behind 2009’s Avatar (US$2.9 billion).
Avengers: Endgame Encore is the re-release of the original film that helps to set up Avengers: Doomsday, perhaps the biggest movie of the year that will see a massive team-up of superheroes against Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom. Encore adds roughly three minutes of new footage that helps contextualise the events of the sequel when it launches in December 2026, with its Infinity Vision and IMAX versions, the former being the debut of Disney’s new premium large format certification, adding an additional four minutes of Doomsday footage.
Despite being a re-release, Avengers: Endgame Encore still managed to beat out the other fresh releases this box office weekend, with Zach Cregger’s recently released horror video game film adaptation, Resident Evil, coming in at second place with an additional US$50.3 million global haul. The film, which stars Weapons’ Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier tasked with making a delivery during the iconic Raccoon City outbreak, has broken records for both Cregger and the wider Resident Evil film franchise, with its total worldwide haul now up to US$196.5 million.
In third place was Paramount’s wilderness thriller The Heart of the Beast, which opened to US$50.1 million globally. Directed by David Ayer (The Beekeeper), the film centres on James Belmont (Brad Pitt), a retired veteran who has to navigate a 56-mile trek to civilisation alongside his combat dog Odin after their plane crash-lands in the Alaskan wilderness.
Rounding off the top five earners this box office weekend was A24’s Primetime at fourth place (US$20.3 million), the Robert Pattinson-led psychological crime thriller that sees him portraying To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen and centres on the reality TV series’ production, and DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island (US$18.4 million), which centres on two best friends who are transported to the fantastical island of Nakali.
