The Disney+ Power Rangers reboot is no more, as the streamer will not move forward with the planned live-action series due to budget-related reasons.
As reported by Deadline, sources stated that developing a live-action series based on such a massive franchise like Power Rangers was a major investment, and the economics weren’t favourable, as Disney+ did not own the IP.
The Power Rangers series reboot was announced in March 2025, with Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz planned as its writers, producers, and showrunners and 20th Television as the studio.
As this new project will no longer go past its development stage, this marks another failed try to bring the iconic superhero franchise to life on both the big and small screens, as it follows Netflix’s own cancelled live-action series, which was scrapped in 2024 after two years in development. These disappointments also come after the 2017 Lionsgate film reboot starring Naomi Scott, Dacre Montgomery, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bill Hader, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Banks, which underperformed at the box office.
With this, the future of the Power Rangers franchise is now uncertain, with the final iteration of the popular TV series, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, released on 29 September 2023 with no follow-up planned. Even the franchise’s original inspiration, the Japanese series Super Sentai, ended its historic 50-year run with No.1 Sentai Gozyuger in February 2026, so whether this will truly be the end of an era, or hopefully just an extended hiatus, remains to be seen.
