‘Artemis Fowl’ Animated Series Heads To Disney+, With Author Eoin Colfer Tapped As Executive Producer

Artemis Fowl is getting a second chance on the screen. After an unsuccessful attempt at giving the beloved boy genius the live-action treatment, the House of Mouse has greenlit a series adaptation for Disney Channel and Disney+.

As announced during the “25 Years of Artemis Fowl” panel at New York Comic-Con, author Eoin Colfer will serve as executive producer alongside Colleen Evanson (DuckTales) and Ben Juwono (Marvel’s Moon Girl), with no word on a release date. The series follows 13-year-old genius Artemis Fowl as he “uncovers an underground world of armed and dangerous — and surprisingly high-tech — fairies as he launches a plan to capture one and steal its magic to heal his dying mom and save his family,” per the official logline.

“For more than two decades, Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl books have captivated readers around the world with unforgettable characters, imaginative world-building, and gripping adventures,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family. “Bringing this beloved franchise to life as an animated series gives us the opportunity to introduce a new generation to Artemis’ world while honouring the longtime fans who have cherished these stories for years.”

The first novel was published in 2001 and adapted into a live-action film in 2020, debuting on Disney+ to negative reviews. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, it starred Ferdia Shaw as Artemis Fowl II, a twelve-year-old Irish prodigy who teams up with his faithful servant, as well as a dwarf and a fairy, to rescue his father, Artemis Fowl I, who has been kidnapped by another fairy looking to reclaim an item the Fowl family has stolen. Lara McDonnell, Josh Gadd, and Michael Rouse also appeared in the feature, which was removed from the streaming service in 2023.

In the 25 years since, Colfer has published 10 additional novels, including the latest 2021 entry, The Fowl Twins Deny All Charges. With over 35 million copies sold worldwide and translations in 48 languages to date, Artemis Fowl is one of the best-selling series of all time.
