‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Heads To The Big Country With Texas Spin-Off

ABC’s long-running medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy, is getting another spin-off, and this time, it will make its way to the Lone Star State with a narrative set within a rural West Texas medical centre.

Grey’s Anatomy

As reported by Variety, the currently untitled spin-off was greenlit by ABC for a premiere during the 2026-2027 broadcast season, with original series creator Shonda Rhimes serving as its co-creator and executive producer alongside Meg Marinis, who has helmed Grey’s Anatomy since 2024. Other executive producers on the project include Ellen Pompeo, who portrays the titular protagonist of the original series, Dr Meredith Grey, and Betsy Beers.

According to its official logline, the series will be an “edgy drama about a team at a West Texas rural medical centre — the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.” The show will also consist of one-hour episodes, although it’s currently unknown whether the offshoot will have any connection to the original Grey’s Anatomy, nor if it will feature any familiar faces.

“I am incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe,” said Marinis in a statement. “This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas. I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”

Station 19 (2018)

The upcoming offshoot will also mark the fourth spin-off in the Grey’s Anatomy franchise, as apart from the main series, which has run for 22 seasons to date since 2005, it has since splintered off into Private Practice (2007), Station 19 (2018), and Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team (2018), although this upcoming spin-off will mark the first one not set in the West Coast of the United States.
