Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continues to dominate at the box office, topping the charts for the second weekend in a row with an additional global gross of US$152.5 million. Meanwhile, another space adventure, this time live-action, has also enjoyed similar success, with the Ryan Gosling-led Project Hail Mary now surpassing the US$500 million mark.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continues its winning streak by retaining its top spot over its second weekend, with its total global gross now at US$628.8 million, which further cements its position as the top-earning Hollywood title of 2026.
Elsewhere, Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary, now in its fourth weekend, marked an impressive achievement of its own, adding another US$55.1 million to its global haul for a combined total of US$510.6 million globally. The space adventure was already Amazon’s biggest box office hit, but it’s clear that the journey is far from over.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is directed by returning helmers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and continues the adventures of Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach, as they take on the evil Bowser along with his son, Bowser Jr. in an adventure that spans the galaxy. Chris Pratt reprises his role as the titular plumber, alongside Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, with series newcomers including Brie Larson, Benny Safdie, Donald Glover, and Glen Powell, who play Rosalina, Bowser Jr., Yoshii, and Fox McCloud, respectively.

Project Hail Mary hails from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and is an adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel of the same name. Starring Gosling as an ostracised biologist-turned-high-school-teacher, its story follows him on a mission to stop the sun from dimming and ushering in another ice age. Gosling is joined by fellow castmates Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), James Ortiz (The Woodsman), and Lionel Boyce (The Bear).
