Glen Powell is joining the already star-studded cast of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but not as its leading gang of heroes, but as the voice of the film’s surprising cameo, Fox McCloud, of Nintendo’s Star Fox fame.
Powell made the announcement via a post on his Instagram page, where he donned Fox’s iconic jacket seen in the games, alongside an equally iconic post caption, “Born to Barrel Roll”, referencing the infamous meme line said by Peppy Hare in the 1997 game Star Fox 64. The confirmation of his casting also comes after eagle-eyed fans theorised the space pilot could debut in the film after a blink-and-you-miss-it glimpse in a previous The Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer
Tracing its roots to 1993 with the original Star Fox, the gaming franchise has grown to become an industry legend over the years, with multiple games and spin-offs, with its most recent being 2017’s Star Fox 2, alongside gaming cameos in titles like Super Smash Bros. Speaking of, another character seen in Smash Bros., Captain Olimar from the Pikmin games, was also seen in a previous trailer for the upcoming movie, leading fans to believe that a potential Super Smash Bros. movie on the horizon.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who helmed the first movie, and while full plot details have not been revealed, the sequel will take Mario on an adventure across the galaxy after the Mushroom Kingdom gets sucked up by a contraption created by Bowser Jr.
Chris Pratt (Mario), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek) all reprise their roles in the upcoming movie, with Brie Larson, Benny Safdie, and Donald Glover joining the cast as Rosalina, Bowser Jr., and Yoshii, respectively.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will launch in theatres on 1 April.
