After a lengthy stint as the Red Room assassin Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson is possibly trading her superhero suit for another, as the star is in talks to join the DC Universe and appear alongside Robert Pattinson‘s Caped Crusader in The Batman Part II.

As reported by Variety, although the 41-year-old’s potential role in the upcoming sequel has not been revealed, the film is set to begin shooting in Spring 2026, with a planned October 2027 release. The film’s director and co-writer, Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), and fellow writer Mattson Tomlin (Project Power) have already completed its script back in June this year, and although Pattinson is set to reprise his role, Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman is no longer expected to return for the sequel, according to Variety’s sources.
The Batman Part II is also set to see the return of some familiar faces, such as Colin Farrell (Total Recall) as Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin, alongside Jeffrey Wright’s (Casino Royale) Jim Gordon. There’s also no word yet of who the villain of the movie will be, although Barry Keoghan’s (Eternals) Joker, which was teased at the end of 2022’s The Batman, might play a greater role in the sequel. With Johansson’s role not confirmed, it’s possible that she might take on a villainous role as well, such as that of Poison Ivy.

If talks go through and Johansson joins the sequel, this will mark the star’s shift across comic universes, previously best known for portraying Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, in multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe films like the Avengers franchise and 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, with her most recent stint in the MCU being 2021’s standalone Black Widow film. Outside the MCU, the star has also joined other massive blockbusters like this year’s Jurassic World Rebirth, alongside a voice role in 2024’s Transformers One.
The Batman Part II is set to release in theatres in October 2027.
