Andy Serkis Returns As Alfred In ‘The Batman II’

Despite his conflicting film schedules, Andy Serkis will be reprising his role as Alfred Pennyworth in Matt Reeves’ Caped Crusader sequel, The Batman II.

As reported by Deadline, Serkis was taught to be skipping the much-anticipated sequel due to a scheduling conflict with his other upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, in which he will serve as both director and star. Now, it seems like he has found a balance and will be taking on both projects, although it remains to be seen how this double duty might affect his screentime in The Batman II.

Serkis will return for The Batman II alongside Robert Pattinson (Twilight) as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Jeffrey Wright (Casino Royale) as Jim Gordon, Colin Farrell (Total Recall) as the Penguin, Barry Keoghan (Peaky Blinders) as the Joker, Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) as Harvey Dent, and Scarlett Johansson in a currently undisclosed role. Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman, however, is not expected to make a return.

Matt Reeves will return from helming the original 2022 film and will direct from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin (Project Power). Additionally, Reeves will also serve as the sequel’s producer alongside Dylan Clark and Lynn Harris. While the film will be under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios banner, The Batman II will not be officially part of the newly relaunched DC Universe.

While plot details for The Batman II remain under wraps, principal photography for the film is expected to start at the end of May 2026, with the sequel set for an October 2027 release.
