James Gunn, director of Superman (2025) and co-chair of DC Studios, has recently given his answer on whether Margot Robbie (Barbie) will return as Harley Quinn in the new DC Universe (DCU), while also bringing up his plans for Idris Elba’s (Luther: The Fallen Sun) Bloodsport.

Fans have been wondering whether Robbie would return as the haywire harlequin or whether her wings have been clipped after her recent outings in Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey (2020) and The Suicide Squad (2021). 2021’s The Suicide Squad also introduced the character of Elba’s Bloodsport, a ruthless mercenary equipped with a high-tech suit of weaponry. Gunn shared his thoughts on the fates of these two characters in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Gunn, the new co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, has been occupied with the reboot of the DCU that began with last month’s Superman, and will continue with an entire slate of movies and shows. Given his clear vision of the DCU, when asked about Robbie’s return as the Cupid of Crime, Gunn replied cryptically, “That will be revealed down the line.”

Though he remained tight-lipped, Gunn did disclose that Elba’s Bloodsport is a character that he wants to bring back for the new age of the DCU. “I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out,” Gunn commented, “So we’ll see what happens.”
In the meantime, fans can look forward to seeing Peacemaker (2022) returning with its second season in Gunn’s revamped DC Universe, which reportedly will be closely linked to the events of The Suicide Squad. Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo, Captain America: Civil War) becomes the head of A.R.G.U.S. and utilises his newfound authority to avenge the death of his son, Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman, Altered Carbon), at the hands of Peacemaker (John Cena, F9: The Fast Saga) at the end of The Suicide Squad.

Given that Harley Quinn and Bloodsport befriended each other and were both on the same team as Peacemaker briefly in The Suicide Squad, it’s not hard to imagine that the two characters could fit in well into the narrative of the upcoming second season of the popular Amazon Prime series. Regardless, if Harley Quinn and Bloodsport do not return in Peacemaker Season 2, then fans will simply have to make peace with that.
Peacemaker Season 2 will kick down doors in the name of justice on 21 August 2025.
