John Cena’s Peacemaker is officially back in action. After years of waiting, creator James Gunn has confirmed that Peacemaker season 2 will premiere on 21 August on Max. The announcement arrived via Gunn’s social media with a brief teaser, offering just ten seconds of footage, enough to reignite excitement among fans eager to return to the chaotic, ultra-violent world of Christopher Smith.
Peacemaker’s first season left the anti-hero in a place of uneasy peace. He’d helped save the world, gained a few allies, but remained haunted, literally, by the ghost of his father. That final image, with Smith slouched on his porch beside Eagly and the lingering spirit of Auggie, hinted that his internal battles were far from over. Now, as the next chapter of the DC Universe prepares to unfold, season 2 promises a deeper dive into the fractured psyche of a man trying, and often failing, to do good.
Gunn, who also directed the upcoming Superman reboot due out on 11 July, has been hard at work finishing post-production on the new season’s premiere. Unlike Superman, which reintroduces the iconic hero with an entirely new cast and tone, Peacemaker continues directly from its first season.
Many familiar faces from season 1 are expected to return, although full casting details remain under wraps. Season 1’s balance of irreverent humour, stylised violence, and surprising emotional weight earned it critical praise and fan devotion. Peacemaker, often written off as a one-note brute in The Suicide Squad, was redefined through his solo show, emerging as a deeply flawed man desperate to believe he’s on the right side.

With the release window now set, Max and DC are positioning summer 2025 as a key launchpad for their next phase. Superman will carry the heavy burden of introducing a new vision for the DC Universe, while Peacemaker will reinforce that the old guard still has a place in the universe. Together, the two titles offer fans a summer that blends the fresh with the familiar: one reintroducing a symbol of hope, the other doubling down on chaos, guilt, and occasional bird hugs.
Whether Peacemaker season 2 will top its first run remains to be seen, but the anticipation is tangible. With Gunn once again at the helm, and a clearer roadmap for the new DCU unfolding, Peacemaker may be the chaotic heartbeat this universe needs.
