James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has begun unveiling details about the eagerly awaited second season of Peacemaker, currently in production. A significant update involves Frank Grillo, known for his role as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), who is set to join the cast as Rick Flag Sr. This casting marks Grillo’s transition from voicing the character in the animated Creature Commandos to appearing in live-action for the DC Universe.
Gunn, who has previously stated that certain actors would bridge their roles between animation and live-action within the DCU, confirmed Frank Grillo’s role on his personal Instagram. With the introduction of Rick Flag Sr., Gunn seems to be crafting a continuity that connects animated and live-action portrayals, enhancing the interconnectedness of the DCU’s narrative landscape.
Peacemaker, which stars John Cena as the titular character, ended its first season set after the events of The Suicide Squad (2021), where Cena’s character was involved in the death of Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman). The upcoming season appears to delve into the repercussions of that act, as Grillo’s character, harbouring ‘unfinished business’ with Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, enters the fray.
Grillo’s inclusion in the series adds depth, considering his history of playing intense roles in movies like The Purge and Skyline. His character’s interaction with Cena’s Peacemaker is anticipated to be complex and intense rather than a straightforward confrontation.
As Gunn juggles directing duties for the upcoming DCU feature film Superman, fans might face a longer wait for the second season of Peacemaker. The new season will also see the return of characters like Amanda Waller’s daughter Leota Adebayo, played by Danielle Brooks, and Adrian Chase/Vigilante, played by Freddie Stroma, among others.
While the release date for Peacemaker Season 2 remains unconfirmed, anticipation builds as Gunn promises to reveal more details in due time.
The first season of Peacemaker is now streaming on Max/HBO GO.
