‘WandaVision’s Darkhold Will Play A Larger Role In ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

The Darkhold is getting a bigger role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The Darkhold, a host of important plot elements to Scarlet Witch’s (Elizabeth Olsen) story, was first introduced in WandaVision. In the series, Agatha reads a section of the Darkhold that’s dedicated to Wanda and her potentially destructive powers, aka, Chaos Magic. While little about the book is revealed, Wanda ends up taking the Darkhold for herself after defeating Agatha and was last seen studying it in the season finale’s post-credits.

With Wanda playing one of the lead characters in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel, the Darkhold is bound to play a larger role too. In an interview with The Phase Zero podcast, Russell Bobbitt, a Marvel Studios Prop Master for WandaVision and Loki, discussed collaborating with the Doctor Strange 2 team and the decisions made surrounding the Darkhold.

“The Darkhold book came from [Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness’ prop team],” Bobbitt said on the podcast.

“How we weighed that out is, [we asked] ‘Where is there more screen time for the [Darkhold]?’ And story-wise, it was going to have a bigger say in [Doctor Strange 2] than ours did in our show. So yes, we did collaborate. We made those together. In fact, they made it for me, sent it to me, I used it and got it back to them.”

The Darkhold’s larger role in Doctor Strange 2 makes a lot of sense. Dark magic in the MCU seems to take a physical toll on its users, as seen by Agatha’s blackened fingers and eyes. Some Doctor Strange 2 posters and trailers have shown Wanda with the same blackened features, hinting that Wanda has learned how to use dark magic from the Darkhold and will most likely call upon it in the movie.

A larger role for the Darkhold can mean a lot of exciting things for Doctor Strange 2 and the MCU going forward. This marks a brand new chapter in Wanda’s MCU journey and raises the potential of the character becoming a villain instead of a hero – especially when you put Wanda’s desperation to reunite with her children and the Darkhold’s corruptive dark magic together.

Thus far, the only character viewers see so far with a vast knowledge of the Darkhold is Agatha – who will be starring in her own Disney+ series, Agatha: House of Harkness too. With the Darkhold set to be a big part of Wanda’s journey and play a larger role in the upcoming movie, there is a lot more in store for fans.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premieres 4 May 2022.
