Though bushfires do happen occasionally, the one ravaging Australia now is on a whole new scale and it is devastating, to say the least. Severe weather conditions have exacerbated the situation, lengthening the dry season in Australia, resulting in a bushfire that has caused severe damage to entire towns, communities, and have killed almost half a billion wildlife in Australia. At least 24 people have also lost their lives to the terrifying bushfires.
Since September Australian firefighters and volunteers have been hard at work trying their best to fight the blaze and put out the fires. In addition to them, many celebrities have also put their foot forward and are actively seeking support from the public to aid the emergency service workers and volunteers, many who are putting their lives on the line.
Some of these celebrities include the Irwin family, Kylie Minogue, and the MCU’s very own God of Thunder, Thor aka Chris Hemsworth, who has pledged US$1 million to aid the efforts in fighting the Australian bushfires.
On a video posted on his Instagram account, Hemsworth writes,
“Like you, I want to support the fight against the bushfires here in Australia. My family and I are contributing a million dollars. Hopefully you guys can chip in too. Every penny counts so whatever you can muster up is greatly appreciated. I’ve added links to support the fire fighters, organisations and charities who are working flat out to provide support and relief during this devastating and challenging time.”
Being a native to Australia, the bushfires are an especially personal matter to Hemsworth, who lives there with his family. Fellow Australian Russel Crowe (Les Miserables) was absent from the Golden Globes Ceremony as he had chosen to stay in Australia and make sure his family is safe.
There is still a long way to go towards quelling the bushfires but any help towards aiding those fighting the fires will definitely be greatly appreciated.
