Taika Waititi's 'Star Wars' Project Will Expand The Universe With New Characters

‘Thor 5’: Director Taika Waititi Says He “Won’t Be Involved”

It seems like New Zealand actor, comedian, and filmmaker Taika Waititi’s time with Thor has finally come to an end, at least in the next six years or so. The Oscar winner rejuvenated a franchise with the critically acclaimed Thor: Ragnarok, turning a stern and fearsome deity into a mortal who’s comical, funny, and relatable. But this approach last year with follow-up Thor: Love and Thunder hasn’t brought the same dividends, standing at a mediocre 67 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

While promoting his upcoming sports comedy “Next Goal Wins”, Waititi told Business Insider that he “won’t’ be involved” in a fifth ‘Thor’ movie. It’s currently not on the priority list for Marvel, but the beloved character still has loose ends to tie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the door wide open for a return to the big screen.

“I wouldn’t know if that’s accurate”, Taika Waititi when asked about rumours circulating online claiming that Thor 5 is in development. “I know that I won’t be involved…I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for.”

The director currently has a lot on his plate: a Star Wars movie still in development, an adaptation of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s space novel The Incal, as well as an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s New York Times bestseller, Klara and the Sun, with the last most likely his next movie.

“I would never feel like they are cheating on me,” Taika Waititi on Marvel if it goes ahead and hires another writer-director for the next Thor movie. “We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day.”

Whether it’ll be facing villains stronger than Hela and Gorr the God Butcher, diving deeper into the Norse mythology, or exploring new outlandish worlds, this news only throws a spanner (or hammer) in the works for the God of Thunder within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
