‘The Batman’ Spin-Off, ‘The Penguin’ Will Chart The Villain’s Rise To Power On HBO Max

One of the villains from Batman’s rogues’ gallery featured in Matt Reeves’ The Batman (read our review) is the Penguin, played by Colin Farrell. The character, in a movie that’s mostly dark and serious, delivers perhaps the funniest lines, almost like a comic relief character.

The end of the movie suggests that the villain is likely to climb up the ranks in the seedy Gotham underworld, and it looks like we won’t have to wait for a sequel to find out if that happens or not. HBO Max has ordered a spin-off limited series, tentatively titled The Penguin, that seeks to further flesh out and expand the world that Matt Reeves has crafted in the movie.

While details surrounding the project are scarce for now, Reeves, who will be an executive producer for the series, told Entertainment Weekly before that “what I thought the next story could be in terms of the Penguin is that I saw there being this kind of ‘American dream in Gotham’ sort of story, almost like Scarface; the rise of this character who we all know will achieve mythic status”.

Chances are, the series will be charting the Penguin’s rise to power, though it’s curious if Robert Pattinson’s Batman will be making appearances in it or not. Along with Reeves, Farrell will also be an executive producer on the project, while Dylan Clark and Lauren LeFranc will write and serve as showrunners. No release date for the series has been announced yet.
