Warner Bros. Japan recently unveiled a gripping new addition to the Batman universe at this year’s Anime Expo, capturing the attention of fans with the first trailer and key visuals of the sequel to 2018’s Batman Ninja. Titled Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, this upcoming film promises an unprecedented showdown between Batman and corrupted versions of iconic Justice League members.
Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League is set against the backdrop of feudal Japan, Batman adapts his garb to match this era, donning a unique costume that aligns with the film’s historical aesthetic. In a dramatic twist, Batman will confront dark renditions of Justice League heroes — Green Lantern (Jessica Cruz), Aquaman, The Flash, and Wonder Woman — who have adopted menacing new appearances and allegiances.
Wonder Woman, marked with an eagle tattoo, wields a Japanese sword. The Flash dons a traditional straw hat, Aquaman sports a twisted headband to complement his fisherman attire, and Green Lantern is clad in a kimono, highlighting the intricate blend of DC superhero elements with Japanese culture.
The first Batman Ninja movie, acclaimed for its innovative reimagining of Gotham’s hero in a samurai-driven landscape, featured Batman battling it out with classic adversaries like the Joker and Gorilla Grodd. This sequel elevates the stakes by pitting him against a villainous Justice League, introducing complex dynamics and alliances.
Junpei Mizusaki returns to direct the film, bringing his distinctive style that fans admired in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Mizusaki, alongside Shinji Takagi and the animation team at Kamikaze Douga, promises to deliver a visually stunning sequel. The script, penned by Kazuki Nakashima with character designs by Takashi Okazaki and music by Yūgo Kanno, is poised to captivate audiences with its rich narrative and aesthetic.
Kōichi Yamadera also returns to lend his voice to Bruce Wayne/Batman, ensuring continuity in the portrayal of the Dark Knight. Batman Ninja first debuted digitally in April 2018 and has since expanded into a manga adaptation by Masato Hisa, which concluded in 2019 and won a Seiun Award in 2020. The influence of the original film even extended to the stage, inspiring a play in November 2021.
Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League not only continues the innovative legacy of its predecessor but also sets a new bar for anime adaptations of Western comic book heroes. Fans can look forward to a unique cinematic experience that blends iconic superhero lore with the rich history of feudal Japan. Warner Bros. has yet to announce the official release date, but anticipation is already building for another epic chapter in the Batman saga.
