The antagonism between Superman and Lex Luthor is central to their relationship, but Man of Tomorrow, the next instalment in James Gunn’s Superman Saga, will be putting that to rest…temporarily, at least.

Speaking on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show, the filmmaker dropped the first hints of the sequel’s story for the first time since his announcement post last week. In the teaser image, a comic book version of the Man of Steel is seen leaning on Lex Luthor, suited up in his Warsuit, with Gunn confirming a team-up between the duo as they face “a much, much bigger threat”.
“It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” Gunn revealed. “It’s more complicated than that, but that’s a big part of it. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.”
The DC Studios co-head is also looking to begin shooting in April 2026, in preparation for the film’s theatrical release on 9 July 2027. Other details, including cast members, are under wraps, but it will mark the suit’s live-action debut after numerous comic book and animated appearances.

Both David Corenswet and Nicolas Hoult are expected to reprise their roles in Man of Tomorrow, alongside Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl (while no official announcement was made, the Last of Us star teased her return on Instagram Stories, adding “See you soon” to a repost of Gunn’s original post). Hawkgirl was one of the superheroes inducted into the DC Universe (DCU), together with Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi).
With US$614 million at the box office, Superman now stands as the top-grossing comic book movie of the year. Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) stars opposite Corenswet as Lois Lane, and the pic has proven successful at launching Gunn’s new DCU, which will lead into Supergirl’s upcoming solo film in 2026, and the Tom Rhys Harries-starring Clayface on the big screen.
