Sony and Marvel’s top-grossing web-slinging adventure, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will finally be making its way to IMAX screens on 6 August, as Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey concludes its exclusive run on the format.
As reported by Variety, while global IMAX screenings will now be split between Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, the latter will still retain most screens and will continue to play across all 41 of the company’s 70mm film locations. Since The Odyssey has yet to be launched in certain global markets like China, South Korea and Japan, the latest Marvel flick was able to benefit from screening in theatres across these regions.
“Spider-Man has been among the most bankable superheroes at the global box office for over two decades, with the franchise delivering US$365 million in IMAX receipts to date, and Brand New Day is taking that legacy to new heights with its record-breaking opening weekend,” said CEO of IMAX Rich Gelfond in a statement. “We believe more Spidey fans around the world will want to experience his latest adventure in IMAX, and we hope to be a major driver of both new and repeat viewing for the latest hit in this incredible year for moviegoing.”
Despite not having the majority share of IMAX screenings, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is still performing spectacularly even with the disadvantage, debuting to a massive US$927 million global opening weekend, making it Sony’s highest-grossing opening to date and only falling short of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame (US$1.2 billion). The Odyssey, on the other hand, managed to generate a staggering US$221 million globally in IMAX theatres alone, and that’s even before it launches in the aforementioned regions.
Directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day follows the “most truthful version” of the webslinger as he continues to protect New York City anonymously and investigates a powerful new threat, all while his superpowers undergo a surprising and potentially dangerous evolution. Also reprising their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are Mark Ruffalo, Jacob Batalon, and Jon Bernthal, joining newcomers Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, Liza Colon-Zayas, and Marvin Jones.
