Gotta Go Fast! ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ Early Fan Screening Rings Up Lively 300-Strong Crowd

Sonic the Hedgehog has sped through plenty of stages over the past three decades, but it’s only in recent years that his presence was extended to the big screen. Following two successful live-action outings, the iconic blue blur is set to return with more chaotic shenanigans on 26 December – for most of the general crowd, at least.

It was a different case for 300 lucky fans in Singapore, who were treated to an advanced fan screening of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on 22 December, Sunday at Shaw Lido. Hosted by Geek Culture, the region’s leading online entertainment, tech and gaming media, and UIP Singapore, it saw a lively atmosphere in the air despite the early hour, taking the form of excited chatter, themed outfits, and a complimentary door gift for every attendee.

Along came the first bit of fun. Included within the bundle are a visor featuring Sega’s two-in-one-game title Sonic x Shadow Generations, and a randomised card pack that may or may not hide a special foil design. Early birds also got to pose and take photographs with Sonic himself, with a Dr. Robotnik cosplayer bringing the perfect touch of rivalry to the experience.

Inside the cinema hall, a test of knowledge was laying in wait. A series of trivia and hands-on activities kept both kids and adults engaged, as they directed their focus to scoring goodies from Smiggle, Goldwood, UIP Singapore, and Sega. Prizes ranged from T-shirts, a utility pencil case, a trolley backpack, and more for the little ones to note board night lights and the grand prize: the highly coveted Sonic x Shadow Generations Collector’s Edition (PS5). Alas, Christmas arrived early for one deserving winner, who impressed with his niche expertise of the Sonic games.

The enthusiasm persisted even as the lights began to dim – and understandably so. Picking up after the events of the second film, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introduces fan favourite character Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced none other than John Wick and The Matrix star Keanu Reeves. The industry veteran is joined by a host of familiar faces and voices, including Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as the titular speedster, Idris Elba (Luther) as Knuckles the Echidna, Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Danny Phantom) as Tails, James Marsden (X-Men) as Sonic’s adoptive parent Tom Wachowski, and of course, Jim Carrey (Bruce Almighty) as Dr. Robotnik, among others.

In a threequel jam-packed with humour, references to the games, and dynamic action, the main trio finds an unexpected ally in Dr. Robotnik in their pursuit to defeat Shadow. There were delightful cheers and chuckles that erupted at certain parts, soaring to a high when the post-credits scenes (yes, plural, because there are two) rolled, setting the stage for a fourth movie in the franchise, due out in 2027.

As the event came to close, one thing is for certain – Sonic the Hedgehog 3 doesn’t shy away from embracing its roots and heritage, demonstrating an understanding of its audience and the ability to fully use its cast of actors to deliver the best movie of the series. More importantly, it serves to bridge the gap between different generations, once again reinforcing the enduring appeal of Sonic’s legacy.

Here’s to going fast for many more years to come!
