After a string of five Oscar-nominated movies in a row, including Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), The Boxtrolls (2014), Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), and Missing Link (2019), animation studio Laika is aiming to continue its hot streak with yet another charming stop-motion film, Wildwood, an ambitious fantasy adventure surrounding two seventh-graders on a journey into a magical forest.
Directed by Travis Knight (Bumblebee), the film is based on the 2011 novel of the same name written by Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis, and follows a teenage girl named Prue (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) and her classmate Curtis (Jacob Tremblay) as they venture into an enchanted forest known as the Impassable Wilderness in search of her missing infant brother, Mac, who was abducted by a murder of crows.
On their journey, the pair will encounter not just magical creatures, but sentient animals and dangerous warring factions too, all gorgeously animated in the studio’s signature stop-motion style. Alongside Lee and Tremblay, Wildwood’s star-studded cast includes Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Richard E. Grant, Tom Waits, Charlie Day, and Angela Bassett, among others.
