ROG Ally Vs. Steam Deck: The Ultimate PC Handheld Showdown

Portable gaming has had its ups and down in the last few decades, but technology has finally caught up with user expectations and experience on that front, delivering excellent capabilities on the go. On the console front, the Nintendo Switch revisited the joys and appeal of on-the-go gaming, and not long after, the Steam Deck represented the ideal hardware for PC gaming.

Following Valve’s footsteps, Logitech and Razer also launched their own handheld devices, but more recently, what excited fans was the ROG Ally, from Republic of Gamers (ROG), as the next big contender to join the ranks.

Outfitted with an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor (Ryzen Z1 for the base model), Full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080), and a display with a 120Hz refresh rate, the hardware caught the attention of PC gamers simply by being more powerful than the Steam Deck.

For context, last year’s Steam Deck comes with an AMD Zen 2 CPU, and a 1,280 x 800 resolution display with a refresh rate of 60Hz. But real-world performance is ultimately what matters most, which is why we put the two devices against each other, for a show-down video.

From battery life and performance to ergonomics, the ROG Ally and Steam Deck have each shown their worth, and demonstrated the potential of investing and growing the PC handheld market.
