One assassin steps out, another returns. With the John Wick universe expanding faster than a gunfight in the Continental, Lionsgate has confirmed that Akira, played by Rina Sawayama, will be making her return in the upcoming spin-off Caine, as reported by Variety. First introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4 as the daughter of hotel manager Shimazu Koji (Hiroyuki Sanada), Akira left an impression as a deadly and emotionally charged fighter, torn between duty and vengeance. Now, she’ll return to the fray in a new chapter fronted and directed by Donnie Yen.
Originally announced in May 2024, Caine centers on Yen’s blind assassin, who made a memorable debut in John Wick: Chapter 4 as a reluctant killer roped back into High Table affairs. With John Wick’s death closing the book on one saga, Caine will follow its titular character after he’s cut ties with the High Table, exploring what it means to live with the aftermath of blood oaths and broken allegiances. Plot details remain tightly guarded, but the return of Akira suggests unfinished business from her final scene in John Wick: Chapter 4.

Directing marks a new chapter for Donnie Yen within the franchise, though he’s no stranger to carrying action films on his back. With Caine, he’ll now shape the story from both sides of the lens. While no release date has been confirmed yet, production is expected to begin later this year. With momentum building, Caine arrives alongside other John Wick spin-offs aiming to solidify the franchise’s post-Wick era. Next month sees the debut of Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas and featuring a cameo from Keanu Reeves. That film will focus on the assassin Eve Macarro and her Ruska Roma roots, possibly offering clues about how these expanding stories might intersect.
For Sawayama, reprising her role as Akira is more than just a return but also a rare opportunity to build on her breakout film performance. Best known for her music career, she now finds herself evolving into a formidable screen presence. Caine will only be her second feature film, but if the early buzz from John Wick: Chapter 4 is anything to go by, it won’t be her last.
