Rian Johnson Reveals Anakin Skywalker Was Supposed To Be In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Not Yoda

Though it’s been nearly a year since the Skywalker Saga ended, the Star Wars sequel trilogy still remains a heavily-discussed topic among the community.

In a latest twist of what-ifs, Rian Johnson, director for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, unveiled the nugget that it was Anakin Skywalker that was supposed to have been the force ghost that appeared to Luke in the latter half of the movie, instead of Yoda.

Johnson dropped this interesting bombshell while answering fan questions on Twitter. He explained that Anakin was initially considered to appear in the scene as it made sense given how the character was not only the biological father of Luke Skywalker, but also previously Darth Vader, which would have helped Luke understand the fall of Ben Solo to transform into Kylo Ren.

However, Johnson felt that including Anakin in the movie “would complicate things more than that moment allowed”, and hence opted for the more “impactful” choice which was Yoda.

Naturally, Johnson’s statement sparked some controversy among the Star Wars community, with some criticising his lack of understanding of the intricacies of the Star Wars universe, while others immediately took his side and appreciated his efforts for carefully considering his artistic choices in the film.

Regardless of what one may feel about this decision, it still does make one wonder how different the entire film would have been if Anakin was that force ghost that appeared to Luke in that scene. This potential cameo would also have been a nice way to honour Hayden Christensen’s work as the legendary Jedi in the prequel trilogy.

Perhaps we could see something like that in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi show on Disney+? Who knows.
