‘Parasite’ Director’s Next Film Brings Horror To Seoul’s Subway

Hot off the heels of his upcoming film Mickey 17, Parasite director Bong Joon Ho has already revealed his next live-action project, this time tackling the horror genre and bringing the frights to Korea’s underground subway.

Via an interview with MBC Korea, Bong described the upcoming film as his “life project” (based on a translation by Fangoria), stating that he has “been thinking about [the film] since 2001”, with the horror film is set to take place within the underground subway in Seoul.

Bong also teased the opening few minutes of the yet-to-be-titled film. “We’re running through the underground section of the subway,” he described, “In the car next to us, people wearing similar clothes start to come over to our side. We’re running. A lot of people start to come over to our side.” This brief description certainly gives off similar vibes to Yeon Sang-ho’s award-winning 2016 zombie flick Train to Busan, mirroring the same tense atmosphere of a crowd of people rushing through a train station to escape an unknown terror.

This isn’t the first time the director has touched on this particular project either, as back in 2020, after his Oscar win for Parasite, Bong spoke briefly on the film, revealing that it will be “located in Seoul” with “unique elements of horror and action”. Among his unique portfolio of genre-blending films, the upcoming project seems most similar to his 2006 monster movie The Host, which follows a family’s struggle when an unidentified monster emerges from the Han River.

In the meantime, all eyes are set on Bong’s upcoming science fiction comedy film Mickey 17, set to hit theatres on 6 March 2025. The movie stars Robert Pattinson as its protagonist Mickey Barnes, a disposable clone worker who regenerates each time he dies, on a perilous mission to the human colony Niflheim.
