In a huge victory for the girls’ love (GL), otherwise known as yuri, community, The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy At All is getting an anime adaptation. The news comes by way of an announcement in the third printed manga volume, with additional details, including staff, cast, and release date, to be shared later.
“Vol.3 is out & anime is happening,” reads author Sumiko Arai’s English-language update on X/Twitter. “A few years ago, I wouldn’t have imagined a third book in bookstores let alone an anime adaptation of this series. It’s so, so touching and I’m so happy to be able to share the news with you guys :,) I hope it becomes something that’s loved worldwide by such a diverse & lovely audience like you guys. Thank you for always being a huge support, you made this happen!! So much love xx.”
The slice-of-life comedy was first posted on X in 2022, before its serialisation on Pixiv Comic in April 2023. Kadokawa Shoten publishes the series in print, while Yen Press is responsible for the official English version, describing it as such:
Fashionable and upbeat high schooler Aya falls head over heels for an employee at a local CD shop. He’s got an air of mystery about him, great style, and an impeccable music taste. Little does she know—this supposedly male employee is actually her female classmate Mitsuki! Mitsuki generally keeps to herself, but since her seat is right next to Aya’s, she can’t help but be extremely aware of the other’s crush. Revealing the truth is out of the question for Mitsuki—but perhaps getting closer to Aya wouldn’t be so bad…
The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy At All has earned popular and critical acclaim, ranking second on the 23rd annual Da Vinci “Book of the Year” list, and winning the Next Manga Awards 2023 web manga category. A drama CD adaptation was released last April, starring Akari Kito (Nezuko in the Demon Slayer series) as Aya and Mariya Ise (Killua Zoldyck in Hunter x Hunter) as Mitsuki.
