Chinese tech brand OnePlus is back in 2020 with its new flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 8 series. Like many of its direct competitors that have come out this year, the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro will both be 5G-capable, as well as sporting a slew of high-end specs that make it a viable option for Android users.
Firstly, both models will house the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset, which is present in the Oppo Find X2 series, enabling it to be 5G-ready in the first place. Display-wise, the 8 Pro will feature a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a 3,168 x 1,440 pixel resolution 120Hz refresh rate- another staple feature in many flagships this year – for a silky-smooth user experience.
OnePlus has also made improvements to its camera system, with the 8 Pro featuring the company’s first-ever quad-camera setup. The camera system comes with a 48-megapixel lens, a 48-megapixel ultra wide-angle lens, a 3x hybrid zoom telephoto lens, and a 5-megapixel colour filter lens.
How exactly the new camera system fares in the field remains to be seen, though it looks as though the company has plans to match up to even the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and Apple’s iPhone 11 Pro Max.
Other notable features include a sizable 4,150mAh battery on the OnePlus 8 Pro, which allegedly can be charged from 0% to 50% in just half an hour. It will also be the company’s first-ever wireless charging-capable device (30W), though its OnePlus 8 sibling won’t have the feature. Additionally, both models will come with innate IP68 dust and water resistance, which gives it some added durability compared to its predecessors.
The OnePlus 8 series launches in the US on 29 April. The OnePlus 8 will retail from US$699, and the One Plus 8 Pro will go from US$899. No updates have been given on the launch price and availability in Singapore yet.

Marion has a serious RPG addiction. Sometimes it bleeds into real life; he forgets to sleep because he thinks he has a Witcher’s body clock. Forgive him in advance if he suddenly blurts out terms such as “Mind Flayer” and “Magic Missile”, because never once does he stop thinking about his next Dungeons & Dragons game.
