The release date for Nintendo’s upcoming The Legend of Zelda adaptation has changed again, but this time, it’s being moved forward, as the film will now launch one week earlier than planned on 30 April 2027.

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto took to the company’s X/Twitter account to deliver the news. “We have decided to change the worldwide theatrical release date of the live-action film The Legend of Zelda from May 7, 2027 to April 30, 2027,” he wrote. “The team is working together as one to advance production so that we can deliver it to everyone as soon as possible, even if just one day earlier. It’s now less than a year until release, but please wait just a little longer.”
The exact reason why the studio has decided to shift the movie’s release to an earlier slot remains unclear, as the original date doesn’t currently clash with any other major film release. Perhaps the studio feels that the project is already in a good state for an earlier launch, as filming for the movie wrapped in New Zealand earlier this year. The movie was originally slated for a March 2027 release window before being pushed back to May, with the team taking “the extra time to make the film as good as it can be.”
The Legend of Zelda movie was first announced in November 2023, following the success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie. Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) is directing the project, with Avi Arad, whose credits include every live-action Spider-Man movie and the Spider-Verse animated features, serving as producer alongside Miyamoto. The film stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Pinocchio) and Bo Bragason (Renegade Nell) as Link and Princess Zelda, respectively, and will adapt the video game franchise created in 1986, which was centred on a warrior named Link as he rescues Princess Zelda and subsequently teams up to face off against the evil Ganon.

While plot details on the upcoming film remain sparse, fans have theorised that it might adapt the events of the more recent games in the franchise, with recent images from the film’s set seemingly showing off a dog that looks very similar to Hylian Retrievers, the friendly pups seen in 2017’sThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
