Tom Cruise’s mission, should he choose to accept it, is to perform yet another round of high-stakes, jaw-dropping stunts in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
As the eighth entry in the blockbuster series and a sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, the upcoming film sees Cruise reprise his role as Ethan Hunt, facing Esai Morales’ Gabriel and a menacing artificial intelligence known as The Entity. According to director Christopher McQuarrie, the film contains “the most difficult thing” they’ve ever done with the series, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats.
In a recent interview with Empire via GamesRadar, McQuarrie shared a memorable reaction from an early screening of the film: “We had a small screening and someone said, ‘I was suffocating throughout the entire sequence. I almost had a heart attack.’ And I thought, ‘I guess we did something right.” While he didn’t specify the exact scene, the trailer teases several adrenaline-fueled moments, including Hunt battling underwater and hanging precariously from a biplane.
The film, initially titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2, picks up directly after its predecessor. Beyond the action, the film also sees the return of familiar faces, including Hayley Atwell as Grace, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, Pom Klementieff as Paris, and Angela Bassett as Erika Sloane, while Hannah Waddingham and Nick Offerman join the cast for the first time.

McQuarrie, who has been a key creative force behind the series since 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, continues his directorial streak with Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Having also helmed Mission: Impossible – Fallout in 2018 and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning in 2023, his expertise ensures another high-octane entry.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning premieres in cinemas on 23 May 2025. With its ambitious stunts and returning characters, the film promises to deliver a thrilling ending to Hunt’s high-stakes adventures, and asks fans to trust him – one last time.
