Marvel Studios Receives Backlash For Continued Use Of AI, Now In ‘Loki’ Season 2 Poster

Guess Marvel Studios hasn’t heard of the saying, “once bitten, twice shy”.

The studio is getting backlash for the second time this year for its use of artificial intelligence. This time around, the studio was called out for allegedly using AI for the second season poster of Loki.

According to author and illustrator Katria Raden, the Loki poster appears to be constructed by using a combination of stock images and seemingly manipulated through AI.

If the Loki poster is using AI, it couldn’t come at a worse time. The WGA strike finally ended with terms for the writers that restricts the use of AI but the actor’s union is still on strike for similar reasons. Although the use of AI for the poster is not replacing actors or writers, it is likely taking work from visual artists.

Just a few months ago, Marvel came under fire for using AI in Secret Invasion‘s opening title sequence. Both Marvel and director Ali Selim justified the use of AI by saying that the generated images matched the themes of the shape-shifting Skrulls, but many folks were still upset, especially since the strikes were still ongoing.

Marvel and Disney have yet to respond to the claims of using AI generated images for Loki, but it will be interesting to see what they say. With superhero fatigue and decrease in box office sales, as well as Disney’s latest move to crackdown on password-sharing and increase prices, an AI controversy may just be the final straw for fans to boycott the studio and unsubscribe from Disney+ once and for all.

Loki releases on 5 October (6 October Singapore), read our review here.
