Martin Scorsese Can’t Shake Off Taylor Swift But Scores Best Opening Since 2010

Best believe Taylor Swift is still bejeweled at the box office, but that doesn’t mean Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon is having a cruel autumn.

Killers of the Flower Moon made US$23 million domestically over the weekend and added US$21 million internationally, drawing US$44 million globally. This marks Scorsese’s best box office opening since 2010’s Shutter Island.

Scorsese’s latest flick stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert DeNiro. The movie is an adaptation of David Grann’s 2017 novel and depicts the mysterious murders that took place after major oil deposits were discovered on the Osage nation’s land in the early 1920s. The movie has been receiving positive reviews from critics and audiences aside, even landing an A- CinemaScore and 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. You can read our review here.

Still, Killers of the Flower Moon takes second place behind Swift’s The Eras Tour domestically. The Eras Tour brought in US$31 million in its second domestic weekend. Currently, the movie is sitting at US$129.7 million domestically and has become the first concert film in history to cost the US$100 million mark in the US.

Coming in third and fourth place domestically is The Exorcist: Believer with US$5.6 million and Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie with US$4.4 million. The Nightmare Before Christmas rounded out the top five with US$4.1 million.
