Mario Creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, Says More Nintendo Movies Are Coming

With The Super Mario Bros. Movie breaking the global box office record for animated films, earning US$678 million globally in its two weekends worldwide, Nintendo is definitely heartened by the movie’s success.

Now, Shigeru Miyamoto, the genius behind Mario and many of their IPs, is ready to break the vault and roll out even more movies based on Nintendo’s vast character roster.

This bullish nature is certainly refreshing from the Kyoto-based company considering how their previous jaunt with Hollywood in the form of the 1993’s Super Mario Bros. was widely panned.

Nintendo, which was previously heavily reliant on video games, now sees itself as a “talent agent” for its characters and plans to create more video content. The company believes that it can capitalize on its diverse intellectual property to achieve further growth.

According to Miyamoto much of The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s success boils down to the focus on conveying the story through visuals rather than exposition. The visual storytelling makes it appealing to both newcomers and longtime fans of the franchise. This approach is similar to that used in Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda video game series, where a story that can be understood with minimal explanation is considered to be of superior quality.

“You should explain a scene in words only when there’s no other way. A drama with no explanations is the best,” said Miyamoto.

Gaining box office success is not enough right now for Nintendo. Miyamoto has now set his sights on Mario standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Disney’s Mickey Mouse, and he thinks that the character is now getting closer to that status.
