Macross II: Lovers Again

‘Macross’ Soars Out Of Japan With Four Anime Titles For Blu-ray

It took a while, but the highly-popular Macross franchise is finally ready to soar past international borders. More than a year after companies Bigwest, Studio Nue, and Harmony Gold struck a deal to permit global distribution of Macross properties, officially-licensed releases of four anime entries from the franchise will be coming to fans soon.

Macross Plus

Announced during Anime Expo 2022, the news sees Macross II: Lovers Again, Macross Plus, Macross Frontier, and Macross Delta getting a home video Blu-ray release in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, though a release date has yet to be determined. With Bigwest taking the helm for licensing, new localisation and distribution partners have been picked.

Anime Limited will release Macross Plus on Blu-ray in North America and Europe, while AnimEigo will release Macross II on Blu-ray in the same territories. The Blu-ray releases of the Macross Frontier and Macross Delta anime series is being handled by Nozomi Entertainment.

The localisation effort is a great deal for the international anime community, as the series hasn’t been released outside of Japan for many years. The long-running issue was finally resolved in 2021 when Bigwest signed an agreement that allowed Macross, as well as 1980s sci-fi anime series Robotech, to be distributed overseas.

The original story follows Lynn Minmay, an aspiring singer, and Hikaru Ichijou, an easy-going pilot, and a group of astronauts. After the group repurpose a mysterious alien ship called the SDF-1 Macross to escape the intergalactic warfare between the newly formed United Nations and the fearsome alien race, the Zentradi, they are jettisoned to the far reaches of space.
