Following a tease in June, we now have confirmation that the madcap adventure that is Lollipop Chainsaw will be getting the full remake treatment, with a release set for 2023. This news comes via publisher Dragami Games, which just so happens to be led by the original game’s producer, Yoshimi Yasuda.
While a proper title or platforms have not been announced, fans looking for a modern iteration of the game will be excited to learn that the remake is being developed by those familiar with it. “A combination of development staff from the original version, including Yasuda as producer, and new development staff from Dragami Games” will bring the Lollipop Chainsaw remake to life.
That said, the power of new technology will allow the team to make some changes to the cult classic. With new-gen hardware, the remake will feature “a more realistic approach to graphics,” but on the music front, there is some disappointing news. Due to music licensing issues, only a few licensed tracks will remain from the original game, but the Lollipop Chainsaw remake will feature new music in its place.
For those unfamiliar, the cult action game was released back in 2012, and saw game director Suda51, movie director James Gunn and Yasuda collaborate for a crazy adventure starring Juliet Starling – a high school cheerleader caught amid an outbreak of zombies. However, it can be hard to play the original game unless you are willing to jump through some hoops.
“Unfortunately, various factors resulted in things making it so that fans can no longer easily play Lollipop Chainsaw, and it has been some time since players have not been able to access the game on current consoles.” Yasuda explained.
“We, the original development staff on Lollipop Chainsaw, think of the game as very precious to us, and did not want to leave it in limbo, where players who want to play it cannot. As such, we purchased the Lollipop Chainsaw intellectual property from Kadokawa Games, and decided to develop a remake. We have already contacted Warner Bros. about development, and are being supported by them in this endeavour.”
Although the game was critically panned by most, it still retains a following amongst those looking for a crazy time. We will find out more as 2023 approaches.
