The LEGO Group have locked in their choices for the three directors who will be helming Universal Pictures’ upcoming trio of live-action movies, marking a departure from the usual animated LEGO flicks such as 2014’s The Lego Movie and 2017’s The LEGO Batman Movie.
Leading the charge are directors Jake Kasdan (Jumanji, Bad Teacher), Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman, Monster) and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block, The Kid Who Would Be King). The three films will be produced by LEGO Group’s Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians.
Kasdan will be directing the first film based on the script written by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul, a re-adaptation of the original idea penned by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows, and will also produce the film alongside Melvin Mar.
Jenkins will double up as scriptwriter for the second film, teaming up with co-writer Geoff Johns once more after 2020’s Wonder Woman 1984, and will also produce the movie through her production company, Wicious Pictures.
Cornish will direct and rewrite the third film, whose previous draft was written by Heather Anne Campbell and Simon Rich.
Universal’s executive vice president of production development Matt Reilly and director of production development Jacqueline Garell are in charge of overseeing the three projects, which are produced under Universal and Lego’s ongoing partnership.
So far, the Lego Movie animated franchise follows the adventures of various Lego characters as they face extraordinary challenges and learn valuable lessons about teamwork, creativity, and believing in themselves. From Emmet, the ordinary construction worker turned hero, to Lego Batman and the Ninjago ninjas, these films offer a delightful blend of action, humour, and heartwarming stories for audiences of all ages.
The three live-action LEGO films remained unnamed as of yet, with no release date nor plot details revealed.
