‘LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy’ Trailer Spotlights Darth Jar Jar, Voiced By Ahmed Best

Speculation is fun, because it can open the door to untapped narrative potential. For the Star Wars community, one of the more popular fan theories involves Jar Jar Binks manipulating the events of the prequel trilogy as a secret Sith, painting a more interesting picture of the much-maligned Gungan character.

It’s still not canon, but that didn’t stop LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy from exploring the idea of a villainous Jar Jar. Released on 6 May (not 4 May), the trailer for the four-part miniseries introduces a red lightsaber-wielding, evil-sounding Darth Jar Jar, who shows up at the end and says, “Mesa gonna hurt yousa.” Another character screams, ‘Darth Jar Jar!’, making a direct nod to the fan theory of the same name.

Similarly, characters, locations, and ships from the franchise won’t be the same as fans know them, appearing as new, reimagined creations. The TIE-Wings is one such example, being an an amalgamation of the X-Wings and TIE Fighters.

Here’s what to expect from the animated special:

“The Star Wars Galaxy gets completely mixed up when an ordinary nerf-herder, Sig Greebling (Gaten Matarazzo), unearths a powerful artifact from a hidden Jedi temple. He finds himself thrust into adventure in a new, wondrously wild and twisted version of the galaxy where good guys are bad, bad guys are good, and the fate of all depends on Sig becoming the hero who can put all the pieces back together.”

LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy

Original Jar Jar actor Ahmed Best will voice Darth Jar Jar, joining Mark Hamill as a LEGO Luke Skywalker in the cast. Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem) serve as showrunners and executive projects on the show.

LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy arrives 13 September on Disney+.
