Lady Gaga Opens Up About “Very Authentic” Harley Quinn In ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’

In her recent promotional interviews for the Gaga Chromatica Ball film, Lady Gaga discussed her unique take on the character Harley Quinn in the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux. Differing from past portrayals, especially Margot Robbie’s recent iterations in the Suicide Squad films, Gaga aims to bring a fresh, deeply personal interpretation to the role.

Joker: Folie à Deux casts Gaga alongside Joaquin Phoenix, who reprises his critically acclaimed role as Arthur Fleck, the Joker. The film, directed by Todd Phillips, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver, delves into the dark and twisted romance between Fleck and the music therapist, Dr. Harleen Quinzel, who becomes the infamous Harley Quinn.

Lady Gaga’s portrayal promises to add a new layer to the already complex character. “You know, my version of Harley is mine and it’s very authentic to this movie and these characters,” Gaga shared with Access Hollywood. She emphasised the originality of her role, adding, “I’ve never done anything like I’ve done in this movie before, so it’s all going to be completely brand new and really fun.”

The film, a follow-up to the 2019 Oscar-winning Joker, continues to explore the intricate psyche of its characters, this time incorporating a musical element that blends dance and music into its narrative. “This movie has music and the dance, it has amazing acting in it. I mean, I loved working with Joaquin [Phoenix]. I loved working with Todd [Phillips],” Gaga noted, highlighting the collaborative environment of the production.

Gaga also teased the film’s unique setting and style, hinting at its aesthetic and thematic depth. “I think it’s really something you have to experience in the theatre,” she said, setting high expectations for the cinematic experience.

While plot details remain largely under wraps, the title Folie à Deux suggests a focus on the intertwined madness of Joker and Harley Quinn. The initial trailers and Gaga’s insights suggest a mix of romance, drama, and psychological depth, all set in the eerie ambience of Arkham Asylum.

With its star-studded cast, including Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland, Joker: Folie à Deux is poised to offer a new perspective on Gotham’s most notorious villains. As the release date approaches, fans eagerly anticipate a film that promises to be as groundbreaking as its predecessor.

Joker: Folie à Deux will open in cinemas on 4 October.
