Knives Out’s Rian Johnson Directs Super Cute Pokémon Go Commercial

Pokémon Go Fest will be happening in just a few weeks and this year’s event is set to be a virtual one filled with competitions and more.

To celebrate both the event and Pokémon Go hitting its fourth anniversary this year, Niantic has tapped on Knives Out and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson to produce a 30-second commercial.

Though it is only half a minute long, the commercial is absolutely adorable with numerous Pokémon making an appearance, and is centred around players literally peeling back the world around them to reveal a hidden Pokémon-filled world. We too would like to see a giant Snorlax snoozing away in our living room.

Johnson revealed that the commercial was produced remotely, with the production team in New Zealand while Johnson worked from Los Angelos.

“Pokémon Go has kept me engaged with my friends remotely as I’ve been practicing physical distancing these past few months,” Johnson said in a statement. “As a longtime Pokémon trainer, it was a real pleasure working with Niantic on this spot. It was a new experience for me to direct a production remotely, and I enjoyed the highly collaborative process and think we put together a fun and upbeat commercial that fans will enjoy.”

This year’s Pokémon Go Fest will take place on 25 and 26 July 2020. You can purchase tickets to the event through the in-app store.
