‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Not A Musical, As Images Tease Bad Romance

Love is in the air this Valentine’s for plenty of couples, including DC’s infamous duo, Harley Quinn and Joker, as filmmaker Todd Philips shared a series of images on Instagram featuring the couple, teasing their relationship in Joker: Folie à Deux.

Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, marking the first film without Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Contrary to speculation, the film will not be strictly a musical, according to director of photography Lawrence Sher. “Its got some music. It’s not a musical per se, but it’s like… it just has music in it, that’s all. Music is a part of the movie and the characters, but I don’t know if it’s a musical. But yes, there is music,” he said.

Joker and Harley seemingly have a more tender and romantic dynamic from the images, one of which shows them dancing on a rooftop, and another of them looking lovingly at each other through the bars of a jail cell. The film’s title, Folie à Deux, refers to a rare disorder characterised by sharing a delusion among two or more people in a close relationship, and hints at a darker film despite the romantic teaser.

Joker: Folie à Deux opens in cinemas on 3 October 2024.
