Some things never get old, and kaiju carnage is one of them. Leading up to the release of Godzilla x Kong: New Empire, there have been teases about the scope of action coming to the silver screen, and its latest trailer gives a better idea of that.
Teasing a clash of titan-sized proportions, the reel is packed with creature-bashing action from Godzilla and Kong, who are now joining forces reluctantly to fend off a terrifying new threat that is the Skar King. The primate antagonist gets more screentime here, with another kaiju seemingly set to enter the battlefield, as hinted in a brief shot showing the glowing glint of two eyes. While its identity remains up in the air, the latest line of Funko Pop! figures may have already lifted the mystery with the character reveal of Shimo, who has an icy, lizard-like appearance.
Meanwhile, eagle-eyed fans may spot a blink-and-you-will-miss-it glimpse of Mothra through the reflection of Jia’s eyes — the young girl who befriended Kong on Skull Island — as she receives a rapid series of visions. This means her return is only alluded to and not confirmed, but the previous tease in the end credits of 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters makes it highly likely to happen.
The extended look at Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire only serves to reinforce the epic scale of the kaiju rumble to come. Apart from multiple versions of Godzilla, fans can also look forward to the buddy cop dynamic between the King of the Monsters and Kong, as well as a deeper dive into the histories of these Titans and their origins.
The creature feature will stomp into theatres on 29 March. Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle are reprising their roles as Dr. Illene Andrews, Bernie Hayes, and Jia respectively, with Warner Bros. describing the film as such:
“The epic battle continues! Legendary Pictures’ cinematic Monsterverse follows up the explosive showdown of “Godzilla vs. Kong” with an all-new adventure that pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own. “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”
