Minecraft is shaping up to be a memorable movie, if the cast list is anything to go by. After previously announcing Jason Momoa would be in the movie, there’s more exciting news. Jack Black is joining the cast as Steve, protagonist of the sandbox game and the player character.
It wouldn’t be a Minecraft movie without the Ender Dragon, which threatens the Overworld, as a party of unlikely adventurers to set out to save their home. Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Macho Libre) serves as director, with Momoa on board as one of the film’s producers. Other cast members include Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black, Peacemaker) and Emma Myers (Wednesday).
After a rocky start, in which former director Shawn Levy (Free Guy, Night at the Museum), left the project due to scheduling issues, it seems the film has finally found its footing. Minecraft joins the increasing popularity of game-to-movie adaptations, but whether it’ll manage to translate the beloved pixel classic on the big screen remains to be seen. The game has sold over 300 million copies and continues to be a popular hit, and the movie has been highly anticipated by fans.
The film is expected to release on 4 April 2025.
