Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer Joins Michelle Yeoh In ‘Blade Runner 2099’ Series

Hunter Schafer, known for her roles in Euphoria and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, has been cast alongside Michelle Yeoh in the new Amazon Prime Video series Blade Runner 2099. This show extends the legacy of the original Blade Runner and its sequel, Blade Runner 2049, set 50 years after the events of the movie.

Blade Runner 2099 is shrouded in secrecy, with few details about its plot or Schafer’s character available. Michelle Yeoh is set to portray Olwen, a replicant approaching the end of her life. This continuation of the Blade Runner saga was made possible after production delays on Euphoria allowed cast members to explore other projects.

The Blade Runner series, originally inspired by Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, has a storied place in Hollywood. Despite the original 1982 film’s initial box office failure, it became a critically acclaimed, influential cult classic. Its sequel, released 35 years later with Harrison Ford reprising his role alongside Ryan Gosling, faced similar commercial challenges but maintained the franchise’s critical acclaim. Production for Blade Runner 2099 has encountered its own hurdles, including delays caused by industry strikes last year.

Beyond her acting, Hunter Schafer continues to build her filmography. She recently portrayed Tigris Snow in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and is involved in upcoming projects including A24’s Mother Mary with Anne Hathaway and Neon’s Cuckoo, set to release in theatres this August.

Blade Runner 2099

The creative team behind Blade Runner 2099 includes showrunner Silka Luisa (Shining Girls), with Ridley Scott and Alcon Entertainment’s co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson among the executive producers. The series promises to explore new depths in the Blade Runner universe, under the direction of Jonathan van Tulleken, who will also serve as an executive producer on the first two episodes.

Blade Runner 2099 promises to deliver a compelling new chapter in this storied sci-fi legacy when it premieres on Prime Video.
