Hide-And-Seek Gaming Phenomenon ‘Meccha Chameleon’ Hits 10M Sales In 2 Weeks

Since its launch on 9 June, the painting-based hide-and-seek game Meccha Chameleon has exploded in popularity, surpassing the 10 million sales milestone in just two weeks.

This milestone was announced via a post on the game’s Steam page on 26 June, which simply reads “We hit 10 million sales! Thank you so much for your support!”. The game has seen a steady influx of players since its release, amassing an all-time peak of 340,534 concurrent players on the platform at the time of writing.

Created by solo Japanese indie developer lemorion_1224, Meccha Chameleon takes on the popular viral “Prop Hunt” multiplayer format, where hiders have to disguise themselves within a map as objects while seekers hunt them down, except with a painting-based twist. In the game, hiders can’t turn into objects in the environment, instead needing to blend in by posing their characters and painting themselves to match the background. The seekers then have to find these “chameleons” around the map before the time runs out.

With its unique ruleset, this opens up the room for players to get up to all sorts of hilarious antics, as well as opportunities to show off their artistic talents, blending themselves against the most tricky of backgrounds to test their camouflaging skills. The game’s concept was also perfect for live streams and content creation, leading to many popular streamers and YouTubers like SMii7Y and CaseOh hopping on the bandwagon and further increasing the game’s popularity.

Meccha Chameleon currently sits at the sixth spot on Steam’s Most Played Games list, beating out heavy-hitters like Marvel Rivals and Destiny 2. Its success is an even more impressive feat considering the game had little to no marketing prior to launch, and it still managed to outsell massive AAA titles like Resident Evil Requiem and Crimson Desert despite launching solely on the PC.
