With creator Mike Mignola at the helm, Jack Kesy (Claws, Deadpool 2) steps into Hellboy’s horns in this eerie new adaptation.
The newly released trailer from Ketchup Entertainment reveals that Hellboy fans should gear up for a different type of ride. Hellboy: The Crooked Man is directed by Brian Taylor (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Crank) and co-written by Mignola and Chris Golden. This marks the first Hellboy film since David Harbour’s 2019 reboot, with the trailer signalling a return to the roots of Mignola’s comics, blending cosmic horror and pulp with a comedic touch.
Set in the 1950s, the film stars Kesy as Hellboy, joined by Adeline Rudolph (Resident Evil) as a BPRD rookie agent. Together, they face the malevolent Crooked Man, a soul-collecting entity terrorising the rural forests of Appalachia.
Unlike its predecessors directed by Guillermo Del Toro, which leaned heavily into fantasy, The Crooked Man takes a departure similar to the 2019 reboot by emphasising the horror elements. However, while the 2019 reboot explored apocalyptic, world-ending themes, The Crooked Man opts for a folk horror approach, marking a significant tonal shift from the previous entry. Nonetheless, Mignola’s role as a producer instills hope among fans for a more faithful adaptation.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man is expected to release sometime later in 2024.
