It looks like the next 007 has been cast, according to statements made by James Bond writer Steven Knight and actor Gary Oldman.
Speaking during an interview with Canada’s The Morning Show (and reported by Variety), Oldman claims that the role has already been cast, expressing his hopes that his Slow Horses co-star Jack Lowden – who was among those in the final running alongside Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Harris Dickinson – would be the chosen one.
“It’s been rumoured that [Lowden] is on the shortlist,” he teased. “We’re going to find out pretty soon, aren’t we? Because they have picked him. They have made their choice, but they have not announced it yet. So my fingers are crossed for Jack.”
Following Oldman’s claims, Knight, who will be writing the new James Bond film, also hinted that the studio already had an actor in mind. Appearing on Radio 4’s Today programme, the screenwriter was asked if knowing the identity of the actor made writing the screenplay easier, to which he replied that “It does make life a little bit easier if you know who that person is, but also you have to write the character, not the actor,” implying that he already knew who was cast.
Rumours surrounding who would take over Daniel Craig as the iconic agent have ramped up considerably since the film is set for production in 2027. Denis Villeneuve, the director of the Dune franchise, will helm the film, with its script written by Knight following his work on the Peaky Blinders series.
It was previously reported in May this year that Amazon MGM Studios had begun auditions for the next James Bond, tapping casting director Nina Gold to lead the search. With so many rumours and statements already making their way across the internet, fans probably won’t have to wait too long for the reveal of who will play the next iteration of the iconic British spy.
