After a three-year wait, glorious, blood-pumping court action will soon be back in play. The upcoming Haikyuu!! The Movie: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump has been set for a 16 February 2024 release in Japan, revealed via an announcement trailer during Haikyuu!! Fest 2023.
The first film in the two-part finale, which replaces a fifth season, is being directed and written by Susumu Mitsunaka, who worked on the first and third seasons of the anime. It shares the Japanese title with the 294th chapter of the manga, Haikyuu!! Gomisuteba no Kessen (The Dumpster Battle), and will cover the highly-anticipated clash between Karasuno and Nekoma.
In addition to the trailer, a new visual featuring Hinata Shoyo and Nekoma’s star setter Kenma Kozume was also unveiled. Production I.G. will be returning to helm the animation, picking up from the end of Season 4. Titled Haikyuu!! To the Top, it aired in two cours — first in Winter 2020 and the second in 2020.
The anime debuted in 2014, and received a sequel series in Fall 2015. The third season, Haikyu!! Karasuno High School vs Shiratorizawa Academy, ran for 10 episodes and aired from October to December 2016. Haruichi Furudate served as the creator of the original manga, which launched in 2011 and ended in July 2020. Viz Media licensed it in English and describes its premise as such:
“After losing his first and last volleyball match against Tobio Kageyama, “the King of the Court,” Shoyo Hinata swears to become his rival after graduating middle school. But what happens when the guy he wants to defeat ends up being his teammate?!”
Haikyuu!! The Movie: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump is releasing in theatres in Japan on 16 February.
