Barbie’s Greta Gerwig To Write And Direct Two ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ Movies For Netflix

After opening the doors to Barbie’s dreamhouse, Greta Gerwig is luring fans through the Wardrobe and straight into Narnia.

That’s right, the Barbie director will be helming not one, but two features based on The Chronicles of Narnia (via The New Yorker).

The two Narnia movies are for Netflix. The streaming platform acquired the movie rights back in 2018 and will be turning C.S. Lewis’ work into a number of projects. Attaching Gerwig to two movies from the get-go shows just how confident Netflix feels about their upcoming Narnia projects.

The last time Narnia was brought to the screen was in 2010. Disney and Fox produced three movies The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), Prince Caspian (2008) and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010). The first two movies were directed by Andrew Adamson while the third was helmed by Michael Apted.

It is unclear if the two movies from Gerwig are going to be straight adaptations of the seven-book series but seeing how the past movies only cover a fraction of the novels, there is still plenty for Netflix to expand and offer to a new generation of viewers.

The Chronicles of Narnia follows a group of children who are evacuated to the English countryside during WWII. The books tell of their adventures in the imaginary kingdom of Narnia, guided by a talking lion named Aslan, as they fight the White Witch and restore the throne to its rightful line.
